Ma-Me-O Beach, Alberta

The closest campgrounds and RV parks are on the shore of Pigeon Lake or other nearby lakes (Wizard Lake and Battle Lake).

Classified as a summer village on the southeast shore of Pigeon Lake, Ma-Me-O Beach is less than 100 km southwest of Edmonton, Alberta's capital. The summer population can swell to 2,000 from the permanent winter count of 155. The lake is ideal for the smaller members of the family with its gentle slope and sandy bottom. Water sports, as well as fishing, biking and hiking are other possibilities besides the beach.

A short-lived Hudson's Bay Company trading post occupied the west shore of Pigeon Lake in 1868. Later that century, a Cree Reserve was established on the southeast shore, and in 1924 the summer village of Pigeon Lake was built with land obtained from the reserve. The name Ma-Me-O means white pigeon in Cree, possibly so named because of the large flocks of passenger pigeons that used to be seen here.
