Strathmore, Alberta

There is a campground & RV park in Strathmore and another just east of town on the highway.

Strathmore was probably named by James Ross, a Scotsman who was in charge of building of the railway near the future town's location around 1883. Ross also had the task of naming the hamlets that were birthed by the coming of the rail. Historic ties with the CPR remain in the irrigation system which was part of the development plan initiated by the railway company in partnership with the federal government.

Strathmore has an agricultural-based economy and in its early days set up a demonstration farm to instruct settlers with inadequate knowledge of farming methods. The farm, which became world famous, grew to cover 2,000 acres, most of which were cultivated with about a third being irrigated as well. Oil and gas development has more recently become increasingly important, strengthening the city's links to Calgary.
