Devon came into being following one of the largest oil strikes in the world. It took place in Alberta in 1947 and the resultant well was named Leduc #1. This event changed the history and fortunes of Alberta and the town of Devon was quickly and expertly built to house the oil field workers. While the oil industry still plays a large part in the city's economy, tourism, manufacturing and research provide diversity.

Well worth a day's visit, the Devonian Botanical Gardens comprise a unique collection of separate gardens, including a formal Japanese garden, herb garden, alpine garden, a peony collection, and various others, with nature trails. Adult learning classes are also offered, with anything from wine-making to flower-drying, as long as it involves the outdoors.

A great variety of activities, events, sights and experiences awaits the visitor to Devon. Have you heard about geocaching? Devon has 79 of these within an hour's drive of the city.
