The town of Smithers calls itself the Town for all Seasons and its inhabitants are the Smithereens. It was founded as the regional headquarters for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1913 but the pervading theme these days is more alpine than rail. There are no less than nine provincial parks in the area, including Driftwood Canyon PP which boasts an impressive fossil bed, and Babine Mountains PP with its 32,400 hectares of mountain trails. Babine Lake alone, the longest fresh water lake in the province, adjoins three of these nine parks. Five rivers of the northern BC area provide fishing for steelhead and salmon. There is a Salmon Run Festival in town in July, celebrating the return of the chinook. Visit Smithers Art Gallery or a private gallery, a wildlife museum, or experience local music, crafts (including First Nations' work) and dance.
