The meaning of the word “Kitimat” in the language of its founding people, the Haisla, is “people of the snow”. An abundance of water-based activities is a natural, given the proximity of Douglas Channel, a saltwater corridor to the Pacific Ocean. These activities include fishing (salmon, halibut, snapper, crabs and prawns), cruising, bathing in natural hot springs, canoeing, kayaking and whale-watching. The 18-hole Hirsch Creek Golf Course is a must for the avid golfer. Check out the Centennial Museum, the Haisla Kitimaat Village or follow the lure of the tide to Hospital Beach.
