Stewart, British Columbia

Stewart, BC, a town of about 500, is located at the head of the Portland Canal, a body of water whose border touches Stewart's twin town of Hyder, Alaska. In the early years of the 20 century, both towns served as centres for the lively mining activity in their adjoining areas.

Nearby attractions vary. You can explore the backcountry of Swan Lake/Kispiox River Provincial Park, which also offers sport fishing for salmon and trout and an Old growth forest, to the more whimsical charms of the Toastworks Museum which features a display of century-old toasters. Wherever you go, you can catch an ocean view or a mountain view, complete with glaciers, ice fields and waterfalls.

While mining is still among the industries of the town, a thriving logging business is well-served by the coastal rainforest climate, with its moderate winters, cool summers and an average precipitation of 180 cm. Also benefiting from this moisture, much of which falls as snow, is the winter tourism industry.

  • Toastworks Museum, a display of century-old toasters
  • Stewart Historical Museum, with displays featuring the area's colourful mining history
  • Bear Glacier Provincial Park, where the Bear Glacier is slowly disappearing to the north
  • Swan Lake/Kispiox River Provincial Park, for backcountry adventure and sport-fishing
  • Fish Creek in Hyder, Alaska has grizzly and black bears in abundance
  • Stewart/Hyder biannual rodeo, held the second weekend in June
