Estes Park, Colorado

Estes Park is a beautiful and pre-eminently touristy town, with lovely homes on the slopes surrounding the central hub which is crowded with restaurants and shops. Rocky Mountain National Park sprawls to the west and has four campgrounds. Here you can view the splendors of the park close at hand and be ready to explore them.

Beware of the possibility of snow in Colorado's high country, such as when you are driving the Peak to Peak Scenic Highway or scenic Trail Ridge Road. Or you might encounter snow or at least a temperature dip when hiking around Bear Lake or Flat Top Mountain Trail, especially during the early days of autumn.

Cowpoke Corner Corral, Estes Park Horseback, Jackson Stables, National Park Gateway Stables and Sombrero Ranch offer a variety of horseback rides for rookies to experienced riders. Riding through the mountains on a horse is a beautiful experience, and you can make your selection from this range of stables.

For these in-town entertainment ideas, you might prefer the conveniences of one of the many full service RV parks close to town. Children will enjoy Tiny Town Mini Golf, or Estes Park Ride-A-Kart and Cascade Creek Mini-Golf and Fun City. There is Estes Valley Dog Park for the canine family members.

History and culture buffs will want to visit Estes Park Museum or Stanley Museum which tells the history of the steam car, invented by the Stanley family. Other accomplishments by the inventive Stanley twins, F.E. and F.O., are also on display.

Or try a community theatrical event at Rocky Mountain Opery. There is also Reel Mountain Theatre, a cinema which has room for local special events as well as independent films and Hollywood blockbusters. Aspen and Evergreen Gallery features photography and original works of art and crafts by local Estes Park and Colorado artists. Any purchases receive free wrapping and can be shipped to a destination of your choice.

Two unique attractions are the Estes Park Aerial Tramway and the Colorado Mountain School. The tramway is a fun ride to a mountain top where you can see all of Estes Park and the mountain views of the national park. You can picnic and wander around at the top; it is best to bring your own food and drink. Colorado Mountain School offers clinics in rock and mountain climbing, in addition to group and individual outings.
