With a population of around 44,000, Twin Falls is the largest city of Twin Falls County. Between 1900 and 1910, a pair of dams and a series of irrigation canals transformed the almost uninhabitable dry canyon of the Snake River plain into profitable farmland. The region is known as Magic Valley because of the swift and remarkable transformation which took place after the water was brought in. The long term result of this initiative is visible in the many agricultural-based businesses which are still the economic mainstay in the prosperity and ongoing success of the region.
I.B. Perrine was the visionary who founded the Twin Falls Land and Water Company with the purpose of building an irrigation canal system. As a result of his tenacity with the project, he is given credit for founding the town. Early prosperity was largely attributable to the presence of a processing center which handled large crops of beans and sugar beets, with additional processing centers brought into being as time went on. Even lately, in a depressed economy, economic development has continued in Twin Falls as major retail outlets have located here.
