The 1,500 inhabitants of Boissevain seem intent on creating a pleasant, low-key rural setting, inviting to young families or retiring seniors, thanks to its low taxes, low crime rates and fresh air. In addition, there is a community emphasis on healthy living, with many fitness facilities, a Health Centre and facilities for medical emergencies. Long ago, retreating glaciers left behind a rich deposit which now forms the basis for the farming in the area. The first settlers were the Assiniboine and there is still a significant Métis presence in the region today. Dutch financier Adophe Boissevain sold CPR shares in Europe to help with the building of the railway. The town was incorporated in 1906, bearing his name. The Boissevain Fair takes place in June and Darbie's Demolition Derby in August 2007 and 2008 might become an annual event.
