Niverville is a farming community located about 29 km south of Winnipeg's Perimeter Highway. People looking for a small town feel while remaining close to the city are migrating to Niverville and making it one of the fastest-growing small communities in the province. Proximity to the famous Red River and its valley assures the ongoing viability of an agriculture-based economy. Aquifers and permanent dikes protect the current town from devastating floods while providing an ideal wet climate to support the growth of various plant and animal species.
The area's rich soil is the result of the presence of the vast Lake Agassiz during the Ice Age. Crops from this region are among the finest in the world. The influx of Mennonite farmers from Russia in 1874 assured that the terrain was sensibly and thoroughly farmed. The first grain elevator in western Canada was built here and the first western Canadian barley was shipped overseas from this location. These Russian settlers later sent grain to relieve the famine-stricken farmers of their homeland.
