Detroit Lakes, Minnesota

The city of Detroit Lakes has a population of 8,569 which grows in response to the influxes of tourists for the summer and winter activities. The tourist industry is the mainstay of the economy.

In the summer there are festivals, rallies and races whose participants and attendees swell the population. Among these, the WE Fest, with its emphasis on country music and camping is very popular, occurring over 3 days in early August. Stay near the action at Country Campground, or the American Legion Campground.

The waterfront is beautiful here with gracious homes, shops, visitor accommodations and a variety of restaurants. It seems that you can cross the street to where your boat is anchored and ride across the lake to work or to walk about town. The lake has swimmable sections as well and its centrality dominates the landscape of the city. The area around the large waterfront is busy and exciting during the warm months.

If you care to venture beyond the city, there are numerous lakes (400 within a 25-mile radius, it is claimed) to explore as well. Fishing is always a possibility. There are public access areas at most of the lakes in Minnesota.
