Wadena, Minnesota

Wadena's town sign is tasteful and small, resembling an old-fashioned theater marquee. It is very much in keeping with the small population of 4,088 and the recollections of its past which are found reflected in the old-fashioned small stores, businesses and restaurants along Main Street. A feature of the downtown core is a number of murals which show faces--town founders, some of them--in addition to a representation of the cross-cultural nature of the current town inhabitants. Many beautiful old buildings from the nineteenth century seem to have been sensibly and carefully restored and are still in use.

Wadena is home to about 8 city parks, the most outstanding of which is probably Burlington Northern Park. This one has an historical significance, in addition to being a gathering place for summer activities. Here the town residents get together for community events and enjoy the picnic area, garden and fountain, and band shell. Black's Grove has a rentable log picnic shelter, and hiking, biking, horse and cross-country trails. Other parks are set up for a variety of sports and there are playgrounds at 3 of them. Well-equipped playgrounds seem to be a Minnesotan phenomenon.

The closest campground to Wadena is Sunnybrook Park, city-operated, which has tent and RV sites and contains a recreation trail, recently resurfaced, which passes through wetlands. It is a short distance east of the city.
