Akeley, Minnesota

Akeley's population is posted at 432. Akeley was a boom town, thanks to the lumber trade in the early part of the 20th century, with a population between 2,500 and 3,000.

There is a city-operated campground (Akeley Campground) down by the lake which is very nice for such a small place. Your first view of it may make you think you've made a mistake, but the actual sites which are below the entrance level are well-shaded by large trees and are a good size, with power outlets.

Paul Bunyan is said to have been born here and, fittingly, there is a state forest named after him, which entails part of the 115-mile long state trail also bearing his name. In the city of Akeley, there is a Paul Bunyan Historical Museum with a very large representation of the legendary (and fictional) hero of the northern central states near its entrance. Depicted here, he is a very fine specimen of manhood with a bull neck, full black beard, suspenders, carrot-shaped physique and plaid shirt. His boots are completely inadequate for his lifestyle and one of his legs is out of proportion, as he kneels on the ground. Fortunately, his magnetic blue eyes distract you from these flaws.

Paul Bunyan Days have been celebrated since 1955 and run for three days at the end of June.
