Fort Benton is a small town rich in historic significance in the western states. It is the birthplace of Montana and the site of a number of trails honouring the past glories of the region.
A replica of the old Fort Benton, a former trading post for the American Fur Company, as well as a military post and later a steamboat terminus, has been built on the original site. The nearby Museum of the Upper Missouri allows the visitor to learn about the colourful steamboat era.
The beautiful Grand Union Hotel, built in 1882 and associated with the fortunes of the steamboat, suffered a history of ups and downs. The most recent restoration in a long series took place in time for its 117th anniversary in 1999, and brought the hotel back to its original splendour.
