A city of about 4,000, Dillon is the county seat of Beaverhead County in Montana. The University of Montana Western is located here, along with Beaverhead County High School. Economic mainstays are agriculture, minerals, cottage industries, tourism, education and timber.

In the Gold Rush era, Dillon was an important shipping location between Utah and the gold fields of Montana. Two railroad companies, the Utah and the Northern, reached Dillon in autumn 1880. Sidney V. Dillon, president of the Union Pacific Railway, gave the town its name. Prior to the gold rush, Dillon's fortunes relied on sheep farming and later cattle farming, thanks to the fertile valley of the Beaverhead River.
