Livingston, Montana is located in Park County and is surrounded by four mountain ranges. It was the original gateway to Yellowstone National Park and is located north of the park.
The city was founded thanks to the Northern Pacific Railroad and originally named Clark City in honour of Herman Clark, the main contractor for the railroad. In 1882 when the town of 500 with its businesses, many of which were saloons, was moved north along the Yellowstone River a short way, the post office was built as a sign of stability. At the same time, the city of Livingston was renamed for the pioneer director of the Northern Pacific, Johnston Livingston.
As a city in the vicinity of Montana's best-known park, Livingston takes its status as a tourist-friendly place seriously and offers a rich range of attractions. The leading industries are arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation and food services, with a significant percentage involved in health and social services as well.
