The following oft-quoted statement from Alexander Murray, director of the Geological Survey of Newfoundland between 1864 and 1883, is still valid:To anyone in search of the picturesque, this great inlet has many rare attractions, in the ever varying outline, and diversified scenery it presents on all sides. He went on to praise its hoary peaks, gently swelling hills, richly carpeted valleys and soft green plain. The Alexander Murray Trail, an 8-km hike, with waterfalls and wildlife, is a worthwhile afternoon's ramble, if you enjoy beautiful sights. The Green Bay area of King's Port and other small centres, will be the site of a Great Whale Coast series of pavilions, which will focus on the region's rich marine history. The fishing industry declined in the early 20th century, while copper mining enjoyed a brief flurry. Then sawmills and, later, paper mills took over. Commercial farming ventures provide the economic backbone today.
