The jewel-like glass floats used by the Japanese fishing boats wash ashore in abundance on the Pacific Ocean side of Lincoln City. These floats have formed the basis for an annual festival, a historic museum display, street art, and provide a signature look for the City of Lincoln City.
The city is on the central Oregon Coast with seven miles of Pacific Ocean beach on the west and Devils Lake on the east. Steady winds, attributed to its location on the 45th parallel, have resulted in the moniker Kite Capital of the World. The moderating influence of the ocean, along with the moist air and dependable wind give the city a desirable and fairly predictable climate.
The name Lincoln City was chosen during a naming contest among school students in 1965. The incorporation that year brought together five communities under one administration and using the name of one of them was considered controversial. So the county name was selected along with the city designation. The population is around 8,000.
