Cloverdale is located in south Tillamook County and, according to the 2000 census, has a population of 242. It is a Census-Designated Place which means that, while it resembles a city, it has no municipal government and is sometimes referred to as a town when incorporated and unincorporated places are mentioned together in a tally.
The county name is drawn from that of the numerically dominant Tillamook Indian tribe whose numbers dwindled severely during the first half of the 19th century, due to the introduction of European diseases. The Tillamooks and other native peoples used the waterways for transportation and food; the white settlers who came followed this lead and fishing became the major industry, with logging and dairy farming also contributing. A railway line from Portland to Tillamook facilitated the growth of these three industries.
The town's founder, Charles Ray, settled in that part of Tillamook County in 1884 and established a store, hotel, bank and cheese factory. Dairying was already well underway in 1854 when a group of farmers built a two-masted schooner to transport their butter to Portland. The County is known now for its self-named cheeses and other dairy products.
