Grants, Oregon

Set in tree-covered mountains, this small center (under 35,000 people) is thriving with new businesses, most of them lining the main highway. A turn off the highway into old town shows a mix of the new with the old. Some of the old buildings feature informative or beautiful murals, some with the trompe l'oeil dimensional effect that is fascinating.

Another enjoyable thing to look for is the bear statuary that stands out on some street corners and businesses. Most of these are whimsically painted or attired. The Rogue River Bridge is old and elegant, one of many lovely or interesting bridges that cross the length of Rogue River which flows west from Crater Lake. The presence of all kinds of flowers and plants, including saw palmettos, indicates that the climate here is moderate, although summer days can be quite hot. In fact, the pleasantness of the climate is celebrated on the welcome sign with the words It's the climate.

Throughout Oregon, you cannot avoid finding the Dutch Bros. Coffee kiosks. The business originated in Grants Pass in 1992.

A couple of RV parks, River Park RV Resort and Schroeder Park, are very close to Grants Pass. These provide full service sites as well as easy access to the city's amenities, which include parks, museums, a large performing arts venue, First Friday Art Nights and night life. Camping with a private beach can be arranged at Lazy Acres Motel RV Park On the River, east of the city.
