The Dalles

The Dalles is a comparatively big city with a population of over 15,000. It has a business end and a busy downtown with lots of restaurants and stores. There are 16 murals on the walls of city buildings, depicting through art the various phases of The Dalles history and telling the stories in a colorful and interesting way.

Trains are always travelling about here along the Columbia River and across country. The sound of them is everywhere too, including in the campgrounds. Most of these in the area of The Dalles are forest-run, state parks, or Bureau of Land Management parks, providing rustic camping. An RV park is located about 23 miles east of the city on the I-84. The Deschutes River State Recreation Area is a beautiful campground at which you will find a large number of sites with power and water services.
