Junction, TX

At least two businesses in this small town sell hunting blinds, there is a meat processing outfit on the main road and people walk around in camouflage clothing. Conversation in the diner is about recent hunting experiences or plans. Junction really seems to be built around the sport of hunting game--deer, wild pigs and ducks. Other than hunting, you have pecans.

The animal theme continues in quite a few of the local backyards where you can find small flocks of chickens with handsome roosters guarding them.

A nearby state park--built around South Llano River and named for it--has really nice camping spots which are among low trees and shrubs. A daily feeding program for the birds attracts a great variety at separate areas. You can see indigo bunting in their season, as well as cardinals, pyrrhoxulia, black-crested titmice, spotted towhees, field sparrows, black-throated sparrows, and scrub jays, to name some. These were present in late fall.

The Junction/North Llano River RV park has modern conveniences and is in a very nice setting, with the a small river close by and pecan trees overhead. It is handy to Junction. Another park with full service sites has a pecan orchard as well. Most of these parks are closer to Kerrville than they are to Junction.
