Mission, Texas

Mission is stuffed with RV parks and the climate is the reason. The year round warm to hot temperatures and the high humidity promote a continual growing season. This feature attracts both people and various species of animals whose food thrives here. Signs at the parks repeat the greeting Welcome Home to the winter Texans. Many parks target retirees and are designated for the 55 years and over crowd who are looking for a second home during the cold part of their winter.

At the south end of Mission is a beautiful state park which deserves a prolonged visit. Its status as a World Birding Center causes birders and butterfly enthusiasts to flock to it. Although their paths and interests do not necessarily intersect, birders and butterfly fans can certainly exchange information on their hobbies.

Bird species here include the gorgeous Green Jay, flashy Great Kiskadees and the noisy and imitative Grackles whose entertaining sounds here include old-fashioned camera shutter noises. The chicken-like ground-feeding Chachalaca and a variety of orioles with their vibrant colors, as well as a number of sparrows and water birds are part of the scene. The bird populations are supported through the feeding and watering stations and the varied habitats. There are 525 species of birds that can be spotted in the park. Bird blinds and boardwalks assist this activity.

A beautiful garden gracing the entrance area attracts many species of butterflies, of which Pipevine Swallowtail, Giant Swallowtail, Southern Dogface, Cloudless Sulphur and Large Orange Sulphur are commonly seen.

Camping at this park consists of tent camping only in primitive single sites or the primitive group area. The surrounding areas have a high concentration of RV parks, on the State Park Road itself, along S Bentsen Palm Drive. Val's Kountry Corral RV Park, Golden Grove, Bentsen Grove Resort MH Park, and The Birding Center RV Resort are some of them.

Staying at any of these will give you the chance to visit the state park as well as take in other sources of entertainment, many of which are provided on site at your accommodations.
