Buffalo is a place where the Old West comes to life. The main street of Buffalo features more than a dozen historic buildings, restored to their past glory.

Among these, the Occidental Hotel, which figured prominently in the fictitious, almost legendary accounts of the history of the Old West, is a well-known landmark. In real life, the hotel was host to such people as Buffalo Bill Cody, Teddy Roosevelt and Calamity Jane. Representing the fictitious guests are Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Tom Horn, a cattle detective and sheriffs like Frank Canton and Red Angus. Owen Wister, an author who used the colourful backdrop of the Old West for his novels, is thought to have staged his walk down in front of the Occidental Hotel.

The Jim Gatchell Museum was built at the request of his family, in commemoration of his work with the Native Americans, cowboys, lawmen, army scouts and settlers. This unique museum is rich in the artefacts of the Old West which came in the form of gifts, given in recognition of his work as a pharmacist in the early 1900s. After his death, his family donated his collection to the citizens of Johnson County and shortly thereafter the museum was constructed.

The production of coalbed methane, a natural gas, has caused a boom in the city in recent years. The Powder River Basin and its surrounding areas have supplied about 40% of the coal used in the United States. The development of methane extraction methods in this coal-rich region has assured the economic well-being of Buffalo for years to come.
